Program Description
The academic areas comprises Ethnomusicology, Musicology, and Theory. The graduate Ethnomusicology program consists of core courses in three areas: Regional studies, Issues (e.g. anthropology of music, sound studies), and Methods (e.g. fieldwork). The Musicology program spans the entire spectrum of music history, emphasizing the humanistic study of music, music in the context of society, and new critical approaches to the discipline. The Theory program is devoted to the theory and analysis of tonal and 20th- and 21st-century music, complemented by a wide variety of topics which reflect musicological as well as theoretical interests (theory students can also study cognitive approaches to music).
