Anti-Discrimination Policy and Response Procedure

UCSB works to achieve compliance with all legislation that seeks to eliminate discrimination toward students.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, or sex. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex (including sexual harassment and sexual violence). Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act, as amended, and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, prohibit discrimination for uniformed service. Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 prohibits discrimination on the basis of genetic information in employment.

The University has incorporated these federal and state protections and prohibitions into the University of California's Anti-Discrimination Policy. The local implementation procedures under this policy may be accessed through the Office of Title IX & Discrimination and Harassment Prevention's website, specifically on the Discrimination Response Procedures page.

Any student who wishes to make a report of alleged discrimination can do so here.

Grade disputes are not within the scope of this policy unless the grade appeal is based, in whole or in part, on claims of discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, age, sex, gender, veteran’s status, genetic information, or citizenship. Grade appeals not involving a claim of discrimination are filed with the Academic Senate. Please visit the Academic Senate's website (Appendix 5) for more information.
